The mind-body connection

In recent developments, psychodermatology, which explores the intricate relationship between mental well-being and skin health, has gained prominence in India’s skincare landscape. My first exposure to this subject was when the passionate Dr Pradnya Manwatkar from Mumbai spoke about her pioneering concept of emodermatology. I then learned about dermatologists certifying themselves in psychodermatology and interacted with psychologists and mental health experts to understand the critical nature of this subject.

This emerging field amalgamates psychological and dermatological methodologies to offer comprehensive solutions to skin-related concerns. With a surge in mental health awareness, there has been a parallel rise in demand for psychodermatology interventions, as advocated by the Psychodermatology Association. Through this edition of Aesthetic Medicine India, an effort has been to foster collaboration among dermatologists, psychologists, and psychiatrists, enabling them to diagnose and treat patients holistically while acknowledging the intricate interplay between mental state and skin health.

How have we achieved this? Read our cover feature explaining the psychological complexities behind dermatological disorders (Pg 16). Also, do not miss our special coverage delving into the world of psychodermatology and holistic patient care (Pg 24 onwards). Additionally, Dr Pradnya herself writes about the innovative realm of emodermatology (Pg 21).

Staying current with recent trends, this edition also focuses on the potential of exosome therapy for skin and hair rejuvenation (Pg 30), the design of Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi’s new clinic MedLinks Punjabi Bagh (Pg 36), aesthetic practices in the era of GST (Pg 39), and the story of Dr Chytra Anand’s startup SkinQ (Pg 34). Moreover, several other articles delve into global aesthetic practices and trends.

May 2024 marks the 4th edition of the Aesthetic Medicine India Conference & Exhibition. Do not miss the agenda on Pg 10, and I urge aesthetic dermatologists, aesthetic plastic surgeons, and aesthetic device companies to make the most of this year’s show.
