Bridal glow-up!

While bridal dermatology is evolving with modern brides seeking subtle, science-backed treatments - aesthetic doctors play a key role in crafting personalised, long-term skincare plans for optimal wedding-day radiance, says Dr Bansi Hirapara

For most brides and grooms, the wedding day is one of the most significant moments of their lives. With the growing awareness around skincare and beauty, the field of “bridal dermatology” has seen a transformative shift in recent years. Dr Bansi Hirapara, Consultant Dermatologist and Founder, H&B Skin, Hair & Laser Clinic, Surat, sheds light on these evolving trends and the meticulous approaches undertaken to meet the expectations of today’s brides in conversation with Shriyal Sethumadhavan.

The new-age bride

The modern bride comes with a clear vision, thanks to social media. They come with specific goals and higher expectations but are also open to professional guidance. While myths perpetuated by influencers often need debunking, this new awareness has led to earlier consultations, often six months to a year before the wedding day.

Gone are the days when brides aspired to look like celebrities. Today, they seek subtle enhancements that celebrate their natural beauty. This shift emphasises tailored, holistic approaches that focus on enhancing inherent features rather than dramatic transformations.

From inside out

Skincare is not just about surface-level treatments. Doctors educate clients on how to achieve that coveted bridal glow by prioritising health, lifestyle, and mental well-being. Skin is a reflection of what’s happening internally. Brides today are more receptive to this idea and are willing to work on their health, diet, and mental wellness as part of their regimen.

When it comes to treatments, a one-size-fits-all approach does not work. For brides with textured skin, choosing between microdermabrasion and chemical peels depends on their specific needs. Microdermabrasion removes superficial dead skin cells and unclogs pores, while chemical peels work on deeper layers to target pigmentation and acne.

Science-backed skincare

With many misleading terms circulating in the market - like “Glomax Special” or “Ice and Fire Facial”-there is a need for sticking to science-backed treatments. Fancy names often lack scientific validity. Effective treatments must be tailored based on lifestyle, skin conditions, and the unique needs of the bride.

For brides dealing with acne, planning must begin early. Severe cases might require up to six months. Underlying causes such as hormonal imbalances or steroid-induced acne with oral medications and topical treatments are addressed early on.

Similarly, textured skin and hyperpigmentation require consistent effort over time. Many non-medical practitioners use improper techniques or unregulated products, leading to burns and scarring. Professional dermatological care ensures safety and efficacy.

Achieving flawless skin is a gradual process. The skin does not transform overnight, with scientifically-proven treatments, we can stimulate cell regeneration, reduce pore size, and improve overall skin tone. Consistency and patience are key.

LED light therapy

LED light therapy, a non-invasive and skin-friendly procedure, plays a vital role in enhancing skin clarity and radiance. This treatment utilises low-energy emitting diodes (LEDs) that emit different wavelengths of light, targeting specific skin concerns. For instance, red light, with its shorter wavelength of around 415 nanometers, penetrates the superficial layers of the skin. This light targets acne-causing bacteria and reduces sebum production, helping brides with acne-prone skin achieve a smoother complexion.

Blue light, on the other hand, penetrates deeper into the skin. It aids in collagen production, addresses pigmentation issues, and contributes to a more even and youthful appearance. While LED light therapy is not typically used as a standalone solution, it serves as a valuable supplementary treatment, working harmoniously with other skincare regimens to achieve optimal results.

It is important to note that not all LED devices available in the market offer the same efficacy. Professional-grade equipment used by trained aestheticians ensures that the therapy is both safe and effective, minimising risks and maximising benefits.

Bridal skincare is not about quick fixes or magical transformations; it is about a customised, scientific approach that focuses on subtle enhancements, healthy routines, and gradual improvements over time for a glowing, flawless look on the big day.

Timeless elegance

Underfilling has gained popularity among brides seeking subtle facial enhancements. This injectable treatment uses dermal fillers to restore volume and enhance features without the need for invasive surgery. Whether addressing under-eye hollows, midcheek volume loss, or jawline definition, underfilling offers tailored solutions for each bride’s unique needs.

Modern brides often prefer enhancements that appear natural and undetectable. Underfilling achieves this by carefully augmenting areas like the cheeks and jawline, subtly lifting and rejuvenating the face. Unlike traditional approaches, where overfilled features could look artificial, underfilling focuses on creating harmonious and understated results. When performed by skilled professionals, the treatment ensures that brides receive compliments on their beauty rather than the procedure itself.

The art of jawchitecture

Facial harmony lies in the delicate interplay of bone structure, fat pads, and skin. Over time, natural ageing and lifestyle factors can lead to sagging, volume loss, and diminished definition. Techniques like ‘jawchitecture’ address these concerns by enhancing the jawline and overall facial structure.

The term ‘jawchitecture’ merges ‘jawline’ and ‘architecture’, symbolising the strategic reshaping of facial features. A comprehensive approach often involves high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for non-invasive fat reduction and skin tightening. This procedure targets deeper layers of tissue, providing a subtle lift and improved contouring over time.

Modern brides often prefer enhancements that appear natural and undetectable. Underfilling achieves this by carefully augmenting areas like the cheeks and jawline, subtly lifting and rejuvenating the face.

Additionally, a combination of muscle-relaxing toxins and fillers can refine the jawline. By relaxing the platysma bands – the muscles that run from the jaw to the chest – toxins prevent downward pull, while fillers add definition and sharpness. Known as the ‘Nefertiti lift’, this technique draws inspiration from the iconic Egyptian queen, celebrated for her sculpted neck and jawline.

For brides-to-be and others seeking perfection, understanding the required timelines for visible results and why certain procedures suit their needs over others is paramount.

Tailored approach

While advancements in aesthetic treatments offer remarkable potential, customisation remains the cornerstone of effective care. Every bride has unique facial characteristics, preferences, and goals. Aesthetic practitioners act as artists, assessing the individual’s features to create bespoke treatment plans. By respecting each bride’s natural beauty and personal identity, these techniques ensure results that are both subtle and transformative.

On their wedding day, brides deserve to feel confident and radiant. Modern aesthetic innovations – from LED light therapy to underfilling and facial architecture refinement – empower them to achieve their desired look with precision and care. With the expertise of skilled professionals, these treatments provide not only visible enhancements but also a boost in self-assurance, allowing every bride to shine as the best version of herself.

Post-treatment care

Achieving desired results from aesthetic treatments is not merely about the procedures themselves but also about meticulous post-treatment care. Counseling plays a crucial role in this phase, where patients must be educated about maintaining their results. Brides, often juggling multiple responsibilities, face heightened stress levels, leading to concerns like acne, pigmentation, and dullness.

Post-treatment care must be tailored to specific procedures. For exfoliating treatments like microdermabrasion, patients are advised to prioritise hydration, moisturising, and consistent sunscreen application for three to five days. Sunscreen, often underestimated, acts as a vital shield, preserving skin health and enhancing anti-ageing efforts even indoors.

For brides-to-be and others seeking perfection, understanding the required timelines for visible results and why certain procedures suit their needs over others is paramount. Education fosters trust and ensures that patients are well-informed, leading to a smoother journey and more satisfying outcomes.

For more intensive treatments, including injectables like toxins and fillers, extra precautions are necessary to prevent secondary infections and ensure skin barrier repair. Patients must avoid practices such as steaming and touching the treated areas excessively. A ceramide-based moisturiser, tailored to individual skin types, supports the healing process and strengthens the skin barrier. Ultimately, achieving optimal results is a collaborative effort requiring patients to adhere to their dermatologist’s guidance, maintain a balanced diet, and cultivate mental peace amidst their busy schedules.
