How well can lasers and lights treat acne?

“Lasers and lights also help in treating the side-effects of acne.”

“ Acne or pimples are commonly treated with creams and oral tablets. However, not all the patients improve well with only these therapies and they need something more than creams to have a clear flawless complexion back. Here, lasers and lights play an important role. Lasers and lights reduce the infection and inflammation caused by Propionibacterium acnes. It also helps in treating the side-effects of acne such as acne hyperpigmentation and acne scarring. Many a times, when these treatments are started early, it prevents the side-effects from occurring on the skin. Many sittings may be required to get the desired result. Generally, in active infection lights such as intense pulsed light or photodynamic therapy is started followed by lasers to treat the hyperpigmentation and scarring. These treatments are generally safe when treated under a certified dermatologist. However, side-effects such as redness, burning and temporary scabbing can be observed after the treatments. These side-effects resolve by themselves within three to four days. Rarely, one may suffer from severe side-effects such as burns and blistering, which need active attention.”

“Long-lasting result depends on the quality of laser and dermatologist’s expertise.”

“ Laser and light therapy are used to treat mild active acne and acne scarring. Light therapy uses particles at a non-thermal intensity to alter the biological activity of the skin at different levels. Low-level light therapy is usually applied via light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as red or blue light. Varying wavelengths of light penetrate to different depths within the skin, with wavelengths of 390-600 nm reaching superficial layers and wavelengths of 600-1100 nm penetrating the deeper layers. These light and laser sources are also being used in combination with pharmacological and/or physical measures to synergise their effects and optimise the therapeutic outcome.

To get results, most people need a series of treatments and multiple treatments deliver significantly better results than a single treatment. Results from lasers and light therapies are generally long lasting. To maintain the results, following the dermatologist’s instructions for pre- and post-treatment is necessary. Also, patients need follow-up treatments once or twice a year.

Also, long-lasting result depends on the quality of laser, skill, knowledge, and expertise of the treating dermatologist.”
