Glenmark Pharmaceuticals plans to sell majority stake

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals is reportedly planning to sell its majority stake of 82 per cent in Glenmark Life Sciences. As in the news, the pharma company aims to reduce its increasing debt load with this move. Glenmark Pharmaceuticals has hired Kotak Mahindra Capital Co to oversee the process of selling its stake in Glenmark Life. It has also reached out to buyout funds to gauge their interest in the stake. As of December 2022, the company’s net debt was Rs 2,615 crore. This is up from Rs 2,150 crore in the year-ago period. The sale of the stake in Glenmark Life Sciences is expected to significantly reduce the company’s debt burden.

Alopecia areata study shows which treatment works better

A combination of methotrexate and low-dose prednisone is an effective and economical treatment option for alopecia areata totalis (AT) or universalis (AU), according to a recently published study.The study examined the availability of treatment modalities for these conditions and concluded that this combination therapy is a viable option for patients.

Published in JAMA Dermatology, researchers suggest that this treatment should be considered as a first-line option for those suffering from AT or AU. For the study, researchers gave methotrexate (25 mg/wk) to 45 patients for six months.They kept 44 other patients on placebo. Patients who experienced hair regrowth of more than 25 per cent at month six were advised to continue their treatment until month 12, the study noted. Participants who had less than 25 per cent hair regrowth were randomly assigned to receive either methotrexate plus prednisone or methotrexate plus placebo. Chronic AT or AU patients showed partial hair growth when treated with methotrexate alone, the research stated. Patients who were administered with a combination of methotrexate and low-dose prednisone achieved complete hair regrowth in 31 per cent of cases.The researchers further observed that a few patients achieved complete hair regrowth with methotrexate alone. However, combining it with low-dose prednisone resulted in complete or almost complete regrowth, along with a reduction in severity of alopecia.

Bakuchiol may help with psoriasis, review article states

A recent review article published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology stated bakuchiol possesses anti-ageing, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers from the Department of Dermatology at the University of Illinois at Chicago have conducted a review of the applications of bakuchiol in dermatology.The rising demand for anti-ageing retinoid alternatives and the trend for ‘clean’ skincare products have made it a crucial ingredient.

The research team made a systematic review of 16 pre-clinical studies, seven clinical studies, three commentaries, two narrative reviews, and one adverse event report from PubMed. They studied bakuchiol for photo-ageing, acne and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation issues. While Bakuchiol does not have a structural resemblance to retinoids, it can function as a retinol analogue through retinol-like regulation of gene expression. The researchers stated that in vivo studies showed a significant reduction in photodamage when bakuchiol was used alone or in combination with other products. It also prevents epidermal growth factor-induced neoplastic cell transformation.

The review states that bakuchiol normalises keratinocyte activity in psoriasis and inhibits melanogenesis in pigmentary disorders.The researchers observed that it has antibacterial, anti-ageing, and anti-inflammatory properties that make it a suitable alternative to retinol. Nevertheless, more studies are necessary to comprehend its applications in dermatology.

ILACAD completes workshop on facial aesthetics and cosmetology

Institute of Laser, Aesthetic, Cosmetology & Dental Sciences (ILACAD) recently organised a workshop on facial aesthetics and cosmetology in New Delhi. The institute offers training in cosmetology, aesthetic medicine, and dental sciences. Trainees of the New Delhi batch received PG Diploma in Facial Aesthetics and Cosmetology and fellowships in Facial Aesthetics and Cosmetology at a ceremony, marking the culmination of a three-month workshop, which included practical sessions for a week.

Tranexamic Acid can be used as mesotherapy in post-acne erythema: Study

The use of tranexamic acid as mesotherapy is useful and promising in treating persistent post-acne erythema, according to the latest research published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. Researchers conducted the study on a small sample size of 17 patients aged between 18 and 33. Of these, 15 patients completed the study.The subjects had persistent post-acne erythema three months after their acne recovery.The cohort underwent two sessions of tranexamic acid as mesotherapy at a two-week interval. A physician injected tranexamic acid into the right side of the faces of the patients. The left side was used as the control group. Researchers used a Visioface device to compare before and after treatment photos of the patients.

Researchers noted that tranexamic acid’s antiinflammatory and anti-redness properties makes it useful and promising to treat post-acne erythema.Tranexamic acid is also safe, cost-effective, and affordable treatment with minimal side effects, the team stated. It can be considered alone or in combination with microneedling, as a suitable treatment option for post-acne erythema. However, the researchers noted that a large case-control study is required to further ascertain the findings.

Poly-l lactic acid may be effective for cellulite treatment in women: Study

Poly-l lactic acid may be an effective and safe method for treating cellulite on the buttocks and thighs in women.The results were published in Dermatologic Surgery.The study involved 20 women with mild to moderate skin laxity of the buttocks and/or thighs contributing to mild to moderate cellulite.The researchers conducted a prospective, single-centre, double-blind, split-body clinical experiment. The findings of this study offer promising results for PLLA-SCA as a potential treatment option for cellulite in women. For the study, researchers randomly assigned patients to receive injections on their buttocks and thighs of up to two vials of poly-l lactic acid or an equal volume of bacteriostatic water per treatment location. The individuals underwent three treatments, four weeks apart. They were monitored for 330 days.

Dr Almukhtar Rawaa, the lead author of the study, noted that PLLA-SCA offers a safe and effective solution to improve the appearance of cellulite. Besides, this can boost a person’s self-esteem and confidence. This study provides promising findings for those seeking solutions to address buttocks and thigh cellulite.The research team noted that the treatment of the buttocks with PLLA-SCA led to a significant reduction in depression depth. Moreover, it also improved the morphological appearance of the skin and the grade of skin laxity.The study also concluded that the treated thighs showed a reduction in the depth and number of depressions.
