Achieving Radiant Skin with Original Skinboosters

Dr Manu Agarwal, Medical Director, SALT, Delhi, discusses the different aspects of skinboosters for glowing skin with Dr Naveen Atluru, Co-founder and Senior Consultant, Nova Skin and Body, Hyderabad, as part of the Let’s Talk Series by Aesthetic Medicine India in association with Galderma.

T he third episode of the Let’s Talk Series by Aesthetic Medicine India, powered by Galderma, focussed on the topic of ‘Achieving Radiant Skin with the Original Skinboosters’ by Restylane. The discussion opened with Dr Manu Agarwal, MBBS, MD, DIP, DERMAT (UK), Medical Director, SALT (Skin, Hair & Laser Clinic), Delhi, enunciating the technology used in Restylane fillers. He then invited Dr Naveen Atluru, MD FAM, DALM, Co-founder and Senior Consultant, Nova Skin and Body, Hyderabad, to evaluate his case studies.

Dr Agarwal started with the NASHA technology, which is the basis for skin boosters or the lifting fillers, and then moved on to the OBT technology required for contouring or expressions, as found in Kysse, Defyne and Volyme.

He said, “NASHA is Non-Animal Stabilised Hyaluronic Acid. There is less than 1 per cent cross-linking in NASHA, firmness is due to natural entanglements of HA strands. There are different types of particle sizes and gel textures, depending on which different types of fillers like skinboosters have been designed.”

“This product comes with a smart click activation. With this technology, you can control the amount of filler that is injected that makes it easier for the injector to focus on the process rather than focusing on the syringe,” he added.

“If a patient walks in the clinic looking for good, plump, hydrated, healthy skin, then skinboosters are the answer. It can be used around the perioral areas, lower cheeks areas, crow’s feet and fine lines, too. In my experience, the skinbooster is the most promising thing that can be used for ageing hands as well as for young hands that need hydration.”

CASE STUDY 1

Patient profile: A 26-year-old female who was a bride-to-be. She wanted a glow on her skin, and was not satisfied with basic skin polishing with microdermabrasion, Dr Agarwal suggested Skinboosters Vital for her. “I would do Mesotherapy with Botulinum toxin, along with skinboosters. So, along with the shine and the glow, they get a bit of tightening as well.”

Dr Atluru’s opinion: This is an excellent treatment with minimal downtime, not much pain as we apply topical anaesthetics as well. And it gives a radiance and glow that, if you have at least a month’s time, you can have those effects kick in within two to three weeks and will last for almost seven months. I would add oral antioxidants or glutathione and maybe a photo facial and energy-based device to give a little lift.

CASE STUDY 2

Patient profile: A 35-year-old female with under eye circles and hollowness. Dr Agarwal did a dermal filler. Although the hollowness and shadow got better, the skin quality remained poor. He put a skin booster under the eye. It’s an off-label indication and you have to be very careful or you need to be an experienced injector to do that. The idea of showing this case is to understand that the skin boosters are not only for a skin glow. They can be helpful in treating as an adjuvant treatment. You can see the improvement with just 1 ml of skinboosters, the skin quality keeps enhancing.

Dr Atluru’s opinion: In a similar case, we used 1 ml for her under eyes and 0.5 ml as an off-label indication as well. It gave a slight little lift, tightness, texture improvement, but with the amount of pull on the pigmentation that came out, she was astounded. It helped a lot with the colour.

CASE STUDY 3

Patient profile: A 27-year-old female with recurring acne. Dr Agarwal put her on antibiotics and started the acne treatment. He also did IPL laser for her before putting her on skinboosters every 45 days for the next nine months. Her acne scars vanished post that.

Dr Atluru’s opinion: If you can microdroplet all across the skin to give more, and push from all sides and lift the skin, then definitely this would be an ideal type of treatment.

Dr Agarwal’s opinion: Skinboosters come with a smart lift technology, so you can do minimal droplets even on small acne scars.

CASE STUDY 4

Patient profile: A 25-year-old female with OCD to wash and sterilise her hands resulting in dehydrated skin. Dr Atluru had tried moisturisers, ointments, and even aloe vera, still no resolution of symptoms. He put one ml of skinboosters in each hand and the dryness was gone.

Dr Agarwal’s opinion: In my experience, if I get a younger client, this is the best approach to adopt. However, in older clients, with ageing hands and wrinkles, I don’t use skinboosters as a standalone treatment as they give only hydration. So, I usually put these patients either on another therapy or some heavy fillers and on top of that I use the skinboosters for hydration.

Dr Atluru concluded the session by saying, “I agree with Dr Agarwal when he says that minimal bruising could occur in certain areas you inject, but you have to speak to the client about this, take pre and post pictures, and definitely get a signed consent form to protect yourself. This is the ideal way to do this type of procedure.”
