Post-treatment care

Dr. Anju Methil, (M.D, D.D.V.) Dermatologist and Cosmetologist at The Skin & Shape Clinic, Mumbai, throws light on the post-procedure care for thread lifts.

It is important for a practitioner to educate the patient about the post-procedure protocol for thread lift, as it is instrumental from a safety point of view. Since the threads are implanted into the skin in a lunchtime procedure, the at-home care rests on the patients. The desired outcome of the treatment and its longevity depends on the immediate care taken by the patient and adherence to post treatment care protocol.

During consultation, the patient is apprised about the post-procedural protocol. They are likely to feel pain and discomfort as well as swelling at the sight of insertion. It is important to take precautions, such as avoiding application of ice directly, as there is a risk of infection. However, sterile cold packs can be used to help relieve swelling and redness after 24 hours. Makeup has to be avoided for at least 24 hours. Regular skincare or grooming routine such as shaving should be done with a gentle hand without excessive rubbing and massaging at least five days after the treatment. Dental surgeries, other aesthetic treatments and use of saunas or hammams should be avoided for three to four weeks. Face and neck massages including other aesthetics treatments also need to be avoided for four weeks.

Lifestyle changes

Certain changes in habits and lifestyle will help ease the discomfort and enhance the longevity of the effects of the thread lift. Sleep facing upward in an elevated position on pillows for three to five days after the procedure.

Avoid high impact sports such as running and exercising including but not limited to weight lifting, for at least two weeks. Refrain from activities that involve excessive face and neck movements for the next two weeks. Avoid over-exposure to direct sunlight. Please keep yourself hydrated with 1.5 - 2 litre of water every day.

During the consultation, it is important to inform the patient about any complication that might arise and the immediate effects that they will see on their face and skin. Irregularities and depressions are common post-procedure and usually disappear within a few days. Other indications include erythema, edema and blood hematomas due to needle-induced trauma. These might require medical attention and will get resolved in a span of a few hours or days. Patients have to follow the postprocedural oral, topical or systemic therapy recommended by the practitioner in case of allergic reactions, infections and persistent granulomatous formulations. In case of any of these symptoms persisting beyond a week’s time, it is advisable to consult the treating doctor immediately.
