Glow beyond limits

Dr Sweta Vijay Nakhawa writes on the new frontiers in pigmentation treatment with PDRN boosters.

In the era of regenerative medicine, PDRN polynucleotide boosters are emerging as a groundbreaking treatment in aesthetic practice, especially for managing pigmentation disorders.

Derived from salmon DNA, PDRN promotes cellular regeneration and reduces inflammation, making it highly effective in treating conditions like lichen planus and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

By stimulating collagen production and modulating melanocyte activity, PDRN helps reduce unwanted pigmentation and improves overall skin texture and tone, paving the way for a new frontier in achieving clearer, more radiant skin.

Why PDRN therapy?

PDRN therapy has gained popularity in aesthetic medicine due to its unique combination of regenerative, anti-ageing, antiinflammatory and healing properties.

Tissue repair and regeneration:

• Adenosnine exerts a variety of biological process.

• Innate immunity modulation, vascular pathology, hematopoiesispurinergic receptors.

• Stimulation of A2 receptors – various cell lines– (neutrophils, endothelial cells and fibroblast proliferation),

activation of these receptors by PDRN results in Angiogenesis.

• Extracellular matrix synthesis and fibroblast proliferation – which are helpful for alleviating atrophic scars.

Anti-inflammatory effect:

• Activation @A2 receptors, which inhibits nuclear factor kappa-B translocation to suppress TNF alpha expression.

Anti melanogenesis:

• Decreases Tyrosinase activity and micropthalmia associated transcription factor expression (MITF).

• May ameliorate long lasting inflammation, atrophy.

DNA repair:

• Provide nucleotides necessary for DNA Repair &synthesis aiding to recovery of damaged cells.

Versatile application

PDRN can be used alone or in combination with other aesthetic treatments such as microneedling or laser therapy to enhance results. In the present day, PDRN is finding place in various aesthetic treatments including melasma, PIH, FPHL, MPHL, laser toning – resistant photoaging associated mottled pigmentation (PMP) due to chronic UV Radiation, PIH due to laser treatment, scars, fine lines, and improving skin texture.

Rise of PDRN therapy in India

In India, aesthetic treatments have been expanding rapidly, driven by a younger population interested in preventative skincare and an older patient looking for effective anti-ageing treatments. PDRN therapy meets this demand by offering visible improvements in skin quality with minimal downtime, making it ideal for the fast-paced lifestyles of many Indian patients.

The introduction of PDRN has also been bolstered by increasing numbers of aesthetic clinics and trained professionals who can deliver these treatments effectively, contributing to its growing popularity across the country.

Insights from clinical practice

In my practice, I have witnessed gratifying outcomes with polynucleotides-based treatment in my patients, particularly in scars, hyperpigmentation and hair growth.

Patients appreciate the treatment for its minimal invasiveness, no downtime and superior results especially when combined with existing protocol.

PDRN comes in vials combined with peptides, and the results are predictable and consistent. It is administered intradermally through microinjections, which involves injecting the PDRN solution directly into the skin using fine needles and mesotherapy devices. Microinjection can be performed manually or with the assistance of an automated injection device to ensure uniform distribution across the treatment area. The process is minimally invasive with little to no downtime, making it a popular choice for patients seeking non-surgical rejuvenation and pigmentation treatments.

Advances and research

Recent studies have highlighted the promising potential of PDRN therapy, with scientists exploring new sources of PDRN beyond salmon. Ongoing research aims to optimise delivery methods and combine PDRN with other treatments for enhanced efficacy. Understanding its molecular mechanisms demonstrates its ability to enhance skin regeneration and reduce inflammation. Current studies are also exploring its use in treating chronic wounds, skin aging, and pigmentation disorders, highlighting PDRN’s potential to improve aesthetic outcomes.

In conclusion

PDRN therapy represents a promising advancement in aesthetics and regenerative medicine, offering solutions for skin rejuvenation, anti-ageing, and pigmentation disorders. It reduces inflammation, improves skin quality, and has minimal side effects.

As research continues to expand our understanding of PDRN’s mechanisms and applications, its role in enhancing skin health and aesthetics is likely to grow, providing patients with innovative and effective care solutions.
