THE DEBATE

Reportedly, a survey of more than 22,000 people across 30 countries found that almost one-third of respondents gained weight during the pandemic period. Factors that contributed to weight gain included stress, takeaway and working from home Has this scenario kept our dermatologists busy with it resulting in to an increase in demand for body contouring treatments? Has ‘work from home’ – owing to the pandemic – led to an increase in demand with any specific indications? Shriyal Sethumadhavan finds some answers…

Dr Anuya Manerkar, Consultant Dermatologist, Panache, Mumbai

“Yes! Work from home has definitely led to an increase in demand for body contouring treatments. The pandemic has changed the whole outlook towards life. It has made one lazy, laid back, and homebound, avoiding day-to-day running about for anything to do with getting to work on time to catching up on daily groceries. Online is the mantra of life – be it work from home, education and supplies. Life is at the click of the thumb! Twiddling thumbs are getting thinner and thinner and hips are getting bulgier – and, hips don’t lie. Body contouring treatments essentially work on targeting specific fat prone bulges by delivering heat or freezing the zones thereby causing degradation and releasing the breakdown products in the lymph stream. The target tissue includes the stubborn lower or upper abdomen, love handles, arms, back fat and outer or inner thighs. Cryolipolysis, Radiofrequency and EMS are popular services. Banana roll areas (below the buttocks) and double chin are also popular areas treated by fat freezing treatments. Treatments followed by a healthy diet and workout at the gym leads to a good maintenance protocol too.”

Dr Sonia Tekchandani, Consultant Dermatologist, Tender Skin International and The Wedding Clinic

“In the pandemic, life has become sedentary and stressful for everyone. Working from home has limited everyone’s daily commute to 10 steps within the corners of house. Food habits have gone haywire reason being easy access to fast foods and binge eating irrespective of specific eating schedules. Also, the erratic night schedules during the pandemic have led to hormonal imbalance (stress hormone called cortisol is released, thyroid, PCOS, and more) resulting in excess weight gain in areas such as the chin, upper arms, lower belly, inner thighs. Hence, there has been an increase in demand for body contouring treatments. Currently safe, effective and non-invasive modalities such as cryolipolysis, radiofrequency, cool sculpting, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and laser therapy are used for body contouring. Tummy tuck, removal of man breasts, getting rid of love handles and arm lifts are after procedures for reducing subcutaneous fat tissue and improving skin laxity.”
